"Gatina Washing Station sits just outside Karatina in Nyeri County, between the slopes of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares. Established in 1968 and managed by the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, the station now receives cherry from hundreds of smallholder farmers cultivating tiny coffee gardens across the region. Ripe cherry is selectively handpicked, carefully sorted and pulped before undergoing overnight fermentation. Fresh mountain water is used throughout processing, and parchment is dried slowly on raised beds for up to two weeks. Once dried, coffee is delivered to Kahawa Bora Millers, where lots are milled with full traceability maintained throughout.
