“Beneficio Brumas Del Zurquí is a family-run micromill in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, nestled in the sub-region of Heredia. Surrounding farms deliver their cherries here, where they’re processed with care. The mill works with a wide range of varieties, including Villa Sarchí, SL-28, Bourbon, Gesha, Typica, Caturra.
The operation is led by Juan Ramón Alvarado Rodríguez and his family, fourth-generation coffee producers with deep roots in the land. In 2003–2004, they began modernizing their methods—expanding infrastructure, experimenting with new processing techniques, and building both a roastery and cupping lab to safeguard quality from start to finish.
Like many producers, the past few years have brought challenges. Labor shortages, caused first by the pandemic and later by migration to other countries, have made the harvest season more difficult. Yet Juan remains proud of what he has built: a family legacy that creates jobs, strengthens his community, and spreads the positive social and economic impact of coffee.
For Juan, coffee is more than a livelihood—it’s a source of joy. He hopes the roasters who work with his coffee roast with intention, and that each cup inspires people to wake up motivated, cheerful, and ready for new experiences. His wish is simple but powerful: that the care and love he pours into the farm travel all the way from seed to cup.”
